If you’re currently in the process of choosing a therapist, along with the FAQ below, you may find this helpful article from The Globe and Mail: Tips for Finding the Right Therapist for You . It offers thoughtful guidance on what to consider when selecting a therapist or therapeutic approach.

Getting Started

What can I expect in my first therapy session?

Your first session is a space for us to get to know each other and explore what brings you to therapy. We’ll discuss your goals, current challenges, and what kind of support feels most helpful. It’s normal to feel nervous. Our first meeting is simply about slowing down and beginning at your pace.

How do I know if therapy is right for me?

If you’ve been feeling stuck, overwhelmed, disconnected, or curious about yourself, therapy can help. You don’t need to be in crisis to start. This is a place to explore patterns, emotions, and growth with guidance and compassion.

What should I bring or prepare for my first appointment?

Just yourself. You don’t need to prepare anything in advance. Some clients find it helpful to reflect on what’s been difficult or what they’d like to change. There’s no right or wrong way to begin. Feeling safe and comfortable is a process and we will work with you to get there.

Somatic & Talk Therapy

What is somatic therapy, and how is it different from talk therapy?

Somatic therapy integrates body awareness with traditional psychotherapy. We explore not only your thoughts and emotions, but also how your body responds to stress, safety, and connection. This approach helps build resilience, regulation, and healing.

How does somatic therapy help with trauma or anxiety?

Trauma often lives in the body as much as in the mind. Somatic therapy helps you safely explore your body’s cues and release patterns of tension or shutdown. Over time, we work to reduce symptoms like anxiety, insomnia, or emotional overwhelm.

Do I need to be comfortable with body-based work to start?

Not at all. Somatic work moves at your comfort level. You are in charge of your session and pacing. You’ll always have choice and agency. Many clients begin with gentle awareness before exploring deeper sensations.

Family & Couples Therapy

What happens in family therapy?

Family therapy focuses on the families therapeutic goals such as improving communication, reducing conflict, rebuilding trust, and understanding the dynamics that influence connection. It's a space for each person’s experience and finding new ways to relate.

Can one person start therapy even if their partner or family isn’t ready?

Yes. Individual therapy can support you in navigating relationship stress even if others aren’t ready to join. Often, change in one person creates ripples of positive change in the system.

Do you work with couples?

Yes. Couples therapy supports partners in deepening understanding, managing conflict, and rebuilding closeness. We explore the couple's goals, patterns, attachment styles, and emotional regulation to help both people feel seen and heard.

Your Comfort in the Process

I’ve tried therapy before. What makes this different?

InteroCare’s approach is relational, trauma-informed and whole-person focused. That means therapy moves at your pace, emphasizing safety, connection, and curiosity rather than quick fixes.

I’m nervous about starting therapy. What if I don’t know where to begin?

That’s completely okay. Therapy is often about finding language for what feels confusing or wordless. Together, we’ll begin gently. There’s no expectation to have it all figured out.

What is trauma-informed psychotherapy?

Trauma-informed psychotherapy recognizes how past experiences can shape your current patterns and stress responses. It prioritizes safety, choice, and empowerment, integrating somatic, emotional, and cognitive awareness for whole-person healing.

How is my privacy protected?

Your privacy is deeply respected. InteroCare follows the Personal Information Protection and Electronic Documents Act (PIPEDA) and all professional standards set by the College of Registered Psychotherapists of Ontario (CRPO). All client information is kept confidential and securely stored, and no details are shared without your written consent—except where legally required to ensure safety.
