Friday Field Notes: Getting Curious About Therapy This Fall
A gentle, no-pressure look at what it can be like to begin therapy this fall, who it is for, and how a first step can unfold.
Fall has a way of asking questions
There is something about this time of year that invites a pause. The pace picks up, routines return, the air has a hint of crisp, and the light starts to shift. For many people, it is also when a quiet question surfaces: is now the time to look after myself a little differently?
If you have been reading along, turning the idea over, or wondering whether therapy could be a fit for what you are carrying, this post is an open door. You do not need to have it figured out. You do not need to know what you would say. Curiosity is plenty to start with.
If something here sounds like you
I work with adults, teens and families, and you do not need to be in crisis or have a diagnosis to be here. People find their way to InteroCare for many reasons, including:
Burnout, chronic stress, and feeling stretched beyond capacity
Anxiety that lives in the body as much as the mind, such as a racing heart, shallow breath, or tension that does not let go
Financial stress or financial trauma, including the way money worries, past scarcity, debt, or a sudden loss can settle into your nervous system and shape how safe you feel
Cancer-related stress, whether you are facing a diagnosis, moving through treatment, or finding your footing after it. My background as a Professional Cancer Coach informs this work
Difficulty resting, switching off, or feeling safe enough to slow down
Relational patterns that keep repeating, even when you want things to be different
A sense of having lost yourself in your roles, your work, or your responsibilities
Trauma, recent or long-held, that quietly shapes how you move through the world
A feeling that something is off, even when life looks fine on the surface
If any of that stirs something, you are welcome here. And if none of it fits neatly, you are welcome here too.
What working together can feel like
A body-first approach
My work is somatic, trauma-informed, and relational. We get curious about what is happening in your body, not only in your thoughts, and we move at a pace your nervous system can take in. The relationship itself, the trust and safety we build, is part of the work.
A first session that is a conversation
Your first session is simply a conversation. I may ask what brings you in, a little about your history, and what you are hoping therapy might offer. You are welcome to ask me anything about how I work. There is no pressure to share more than feels comfortable. It is as much about you noticing whether this feels like a fit as it is about me understanding what you need.
A free consult, if you would like one
If you are not sure about booking a full session, a free fifteen-minute phone consult is a low-pressure way to ask questions, get a feel for how I work, and decide what comes next.
Where we can meet
I offer in-person sessions at two locations in Toronto's west end:
Roncesvalles, a quieter, residential stretch that many clients find easy to reach from across the west end and beyond
The Junction, one of Toronto's most walkable and community-rooted neighbourhoods
Online sessions are available across Canada, with the same approach and the same care.
A few practical details
Sessions are fifty minutes
I work with individuals: teens and adults, and families
I cannot bill OHIP or most insurance plans directly, though many extended health plans cover registered psychotherapy, and receipts are provided for you to submit for reimbursement
Availability varies by office and day, so if you have a preferred time, the free consult is a good place to ask what is open
If anything, here is unclear, the free consult is a good place to ask.
Something to carry with you
Therapy is not a last resort, and it is not something you earn by struggling long enough. It is a space you can choose, at any point, because you are curious about yourself, want to feel more at home in your life, or simply need somewhere to bring the things that do not fit anywhere else.
The first step is often smaller than it feels from here.
If you are curious
I am welcoming new and returning clients in Roncesvalles, the Junction, and online across Canada.
