Staying in Summer While It’s Still Here
When everyone around you is already talking about fall, how to stay present in what remains, using interoception and somatic anchoring to keep yourself in the moment.
🌞 It Is Still Summer
Some how back-to-school displays are appearing, social media is filled with September planning, and summer has started to feel like it is already over, even while we are still standing in the warm evening light on Roncesvalles avenue.
This post is a gentle interruption of that pattern. Not a denial that fall is coming, but an invitation to become curious about how you return to the present moment. When your mind drifts into future lists and thoughts, can you stay a moment longer in August?
🧠 How the Mind Leaves Before the Body Does
The mind can be quite’ good at anticipation. It is one of the things that makes us adaptable, the ability to prepare for what is coming. But that same capacity can pull us out of what is actually here, replacing present experience with mental rehearsal for a future that has not arrived yet.
When you are already planning September while sitting on a patio in August, you are physically in one place and mentally in another. The patio is there. The warmth is there. The particular quality of mid-August light over the Junction is there. But you are not quite in it.
Interoception, the practice of tuning into your internal physical experience, is one of the most reliable ways to return. The body is always in the present moment, even when the mind has wandered ahead. Coming back into the body means coming back into now.
⚡ Four Ways to Come Back to the Present
The sensory landing
When your mind drifts into fall planning or September anxiety, pause and notice five things you can physically feel right now: the temperature of the air, the weight of your feet, the sound closest to you, or the texture under your hands.
This is not a distraction. It is a return to the present moment.
One thing, fully
Choose one summer experience this week: a patio meal, a swim, or an evening walk through High Park, and do it without multitasking.
Presence is not a talent; it is a practice.
Notice when you are borrowing trouble
Ask yourself: “Is there anything I can actually do about this right now?”
If the answer is yes, do it. If the answer is no, you may be worrying rather than planning, and future-focused anxiety is often a nervous system response, not a problem-solving strategy.
Let summer be enough
If part of you is already grieving the end of summer, pause and acknowledge it. Grounded gratitude is one of the simplest ways to return to the body and the present moment.
What has this season given you? What are you grateful for right now, while it is still here?
✨ The Takeaway
Presence is not about ignoring what is coming. It is about not letting what is coming steal what is still here.
📣 If Your Mind Is Already in September
If you notice that your mind is often living several weeks ahead of your body, that pattern is worth paying attention to. It is something we often explore in somatic therapy. I see clients in my Junction and Roncesvalles offices and online across Canada.
