Lessons on Heart, Health, and Staying Grounded
As February comes to a close, often recognized as Heart Month, it’s a natural time to reflect on the link between our emotional well-being and our physical "heart" health. In the therapy room, we often talk about the heart not just as a pump, but as a central player in our nervous system.
When we are stressed, our heart rate increases, our breath quickens, and our body enters a state of "high alert." If we stay in this state too long, it takes a toll on both our physical health and our emotional capacity.
✨ The Heart-Brain Connection
Your heart is constantly sending signals to your brain about how safe or stressed you are. This is why "calming down" isn't just a mental task, it is a physical one.
The "Braced" Heart: When we are in a state of chronic stress (like the mid-winter slump), our heart rate variability often decreases. We feel "stuck" in a certain rhythm, making it harder to adapt to new stressors.
The "Grounded" Heart: When we use tools like slow, rhythmic breathing, we are manually telling our heart to slow down. The heart then sends a signal to the brain: "We are safe. You can stop the stress response now."
🛋️ Rightsizing Your Health Goals
As we move toward March, consider how you can "rightsize" your approach to health. It’s not just about exercise or diet; it’s about the quality of your internal environment.
Notice the Pace: How often do you feel "rushed" even when there is no deadline? That is your heart and nervous system running too fast.
Practice the Pause: Take three minutes a day to simply feel your heartbeat. Don't try to change it; just notice it. This is a foundational act of interoception.
✨ Integrating Heart and Mind
Sustainable health is built on integration. By paying attention to the physical signals of your heart, you become more adept at managing your emotional life. You move from a state of "pushing" to a state of steady, grounded progress.
