EFFT Toronto: Helping Your Child Navigate Big Emotions and Stress
Using Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT) to handle big emotions at home.
From the Therapist’s Chair: Becoming Your Child’s Emotional Anchor
In my work with Emotion-Focused Family Therapy (EFFT), parents often ask: "How do I get them to stop acting out?" Often, these big reactions are connected to stress, overwhelm, or underlying emotional experiences that a child doesn’t yet have the tools to process.
When a child or teen has a "big" reaction, their nervous system is essentially ‘unanchored.’ As a parent, you don't need to join them in the storm; you need to be the anchor they can hook into to find their way back to calm.
✨ The Steps of Emotion Coaching
EFFT provides a grounded roadmap for these high-tension moments. Instead of jumping to logic or punishment, try this:
Validation First: This is the most powerful tool in your kit. Validation doesn't mean you agree with the behaviour; it means you understand the feeling. "I can see why you're so frustrated that you can't go out tonight. It feels unfair when your plans change." This kind of validation helps regulate their nervous system and reduces emotional overwhelm.
Emotional Support: Offer comfort before solutions. A hand on a shoulder or just sitting in silence tells their nervous system: "I'm here, and I can handle your big feelings."
Problem Solving (Later): Only after their system has settled can you talk about rules or next steps. If their brain is still in "fight or flight," their nervous system isn’t ready to process logic.
🛋️ Rightsizing the Parental Role
You don't have to be a "perfect" parent to be an effective anchor. You just have to be willing to stay present and practice repair when things go wrong. This is how we build secure attachment—one grounded interaction at a time.
