Noticing the Mid-Winter Wall: Winter Fatigue & Nervous System Capacity

🧱 When February Feels Heavy

Mid-winter fatigue is something I see often in my psychotherapy practice in Toronto’s Junction. February can be the hardest month. The novelty of winter has often faded, the wind feels a bit sharper, and we might hit a metaphorical wall.

While the instinct is often to "push through," we might find that fighting our capacity only leads to more exhaustion. At InteroCare, we often explore what happens when we listen to that "wall" instead of trying to climb it.

🧠 What Your System Might Be Carrying

It’s helpful to consider that your nervous system is likely managing a lot right now:

  • Less Sunlight: Which can naturally lower our "baseline" energy.

  • Winter Bracing: The way our bodies subconsciously tense against the cold, keeping us in a state of low-grade alert.

  • Logistical Load: The extra effort it takes just to navigate a Toronto winter.

✨ Small Invitations for Your Day

If you're feeling at capacity, you might consider these Junction psychotherapy strategies to help settle your system:

  • Naming the Sensation: You might try noticing the physical feeling of the "wall" (perhaps a heaviness in the limbs or a foggy mind). Simply acknowledging, "My system feels at its limit right now," can sometimes take the pressure off.

  • Exploring the "One-In, One-Out" Rule: If a new commitment arrives, you might look for one thing to set aside. This helps keep your daily load closer to your actual energy levels.

  • Micro-Resets: You might find it helpful to take two minutes to sit, feel the contact of your feet on the floor, and notice your breath. This small act of interoception can signal to your brain that it’s okay to settle.
