Spring Reset for Your Mind: Letting Go of Stress and Burnout Patterns
Identifying and releasing the "mental clutter" that kept you safe in winter but is now holding you back.
🧹 Beyond the Closet
In the Junction, April is the time for deep cleaning our homes. But in psychotherapy, we look at Spring Cleaning for the Mind. We all have mental habits, like "bracing" for bad news or staying in a "freeze" state, that may have served a purpose during the dark winter months but no longer fit the current season. These patterns are often linked to stress, burnout, or nervous system responses that once helped you cope.
⚡ 3 Ways to Clear the Clutter
If you’re feeling mentally crowded, try these quick shifts:
Audit Your "Shoulds": Take a look at your to-do list. How many items start with "I should"? If it doesn’t align with your current energy, especially if you’re already feeling overwhelmed or burnt out. Rightsize it or remove it entirely.
Release the "Winter Bracing": Notice if you are still tensing your shoulders as if walking against a cold wind. This physical "clutter" tells your nervous system you are still under threat, even when things have changed. This kind of ongoing bracing is common in both stress and trauma responses.
Update Your Routine: Just because a habit worked in February doesn't mean it works in April. Choose one small thing to change, a different morning walk route or a new evening ritual.
✨ The Takeaway
Mental health isn't just about adding new tools; it's about clearing out the ones that are taking up unnecessary space. By letting go of outdated habits, you make room for more sustainable, regulated ways of moving through your life.
